However, there are also a lot of new features that’ll make BF4 online feel like a completely different experience. In this overview I’ve collected some of the most important news.
Here are some of the new things DICE has incorporated into Battlefield 4 multiplayer:
Well, 64 players is old news to PC gamers. But to the console people, more than a doubling of the number of players in a match is brand new. This goes for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. On Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, there’ll be a maximum of 24 gamers in a match.
You’re a next-gen console gamer? Then you should get ready for many higher-intensity matches online.
Five in Squads
A squad consists of up to five players, compared to four in Battlefield 3. According to DICE, a lot of gamers have called for an expansion of the number of squad members. In the best case scenario, five squad members will ensure more flexibility and even better team-based gameplay.
Counter Knife Attack
If you’re attacked by a hostile with a knife in Battlefield 3, it’s game over. Not in BF4 multiplayer. Here, it’s possible to fend off a knife attack.
Swimming and Gunning
Not quite running and gunning, but definitely an improvement.
If you’re in water in Battlefield 3 you become, almost literally, a sitting duck. You can’t use your own weapons in the water in Battlefield 3. But you can in Battlefield 4 online. Finally, you’re able to defend yourself while swimming, as you can use your secondary gun.
This latter point is practical if you meet a barracuda (just kidding) or enemies who are also taking a dip.
Your character can finally swim at two speeds.
Now you don’t have to wait for a swimming squad mate to get ashore before you can spawn on him or her. In Battlefield 4 multiplayer you can spawn on soldiers in the water too.
Finally! It’s possible to dive with your character. This opens up a whole new set of possibilities in the line of surprise attacks, as well as for escaping your enemy’s bullets.
Squad Specializations are now Field Upgrades
In Battlefield 3, all squad specializations (Squad Sprint, Squad Ammo, Squad Explosives, Squad Cover, and so on) are available at the start of the match. In BF4, these specializations are called Field Upgrades. They are unlocked as you go during a match. How many of them are unlocked depends on you and your squad’s performance.
Be aware that some of the specializations are reset when everyone in your squad, including yourself, is terminated.
You’ll no longer just hear that someone’s seen a sniper, machine gunner, tank, and so on. Now, you’ll also hear where in the gamescape the unfriendly’s situated – e.g. “Sniper to the east”.
You can use your gun to blow up fire extinguishers now, and thus create a small smoke screen.
It’s possible to set up road blocks for vehicles. This way you can stop, or at least slow down, approaching hostile vehicles.
As you move through the ranks, you’ll receive Battlepacks. These can contain new dog tags, knives, XP boosts, and attachments for your weapons. The attachments will be different versions of those you normally unlock, for example a different kind of silencer. The Battlepack silencer behaves the same way as the standard version, but it looks different.
Weapons and Equipment
Experienced Battlefield 3 players will soon discover that DICE has made several substantial changes to weapons and equipment. Here are some of these changes:
The suppressing effect in weapons like personal defense weapons, carbines, and assault rifles has been reduced. The visual effect of a bullet almost hitting your character is less blurring. But one weapon group has had its suppressing effect increased – light machine guns.
Zeroing Telescopic Sights
The online Battlefield games have bullet drop. In Battlefield 3, this means that you’ll have to place the center of the reticle a little above targets that are far away. Anyone who’s ever played Recon will be familiar with this.
In the real world, you can adjust your sight so that the reticle’s center indicates where the bullet will hit, no matter the distance. The process is called zeroing the rifle. Now this is possible in Battlefield 4 multiplayer, too.
C4 is particularly effective against tanks and other vehicles. Place two or three charges on the beast and it’s, “Bye-bye, metal junk”.
In BF4, recons have gotten their explosive advantage from Bad Company 2 back. Recons are now able to equip themselves with C4 and claymore mines. Additionally, the C4 charge can now be thrown a fair bit further than what’s possible in BF3.
Portable Laser Designator
A Portable Laser Designator (PLD) has accompanied the SOFLAM from Battlefield 3. You can carry the PLD with you, get it out when necessary, and use it like a pair of binoculars, like when you want to laser paint a tank or jet.
It works great for finding your target range, too.
Carbines and Marksman Rifles for All
In each class, you can still choose from weapons exclusive to that class. Additionally, all soldiers can be equipped either with carbines like the M4, G36C, and SCAR-H, or marksman rifles, independently of class. A marksman rifle is, simply put, somewhere between an assault rifle and a sniper rifle.
Battle Pickup Weapons
Battle Pickup Weapons are new to BF4 multiplayer. These are weapons spread around the different multiplayer maps. You can’t select these weapons when spawning. To use them, you’ll have to find them during the heat of battle.
New Grips and Sights
The number of grips for your main weapon’s increased considerably in BF4 from BF3.
In the former, you can choose from a range of different grips. Each grip changes the weapon’s performance – some for the better, others for the worse.
You’ve also got more sights to choose from. You can for example pick the canted iron sight. This works in combination with the optical sights.
You can also place the ballistic scope on your weapon. This magnifies with no less than 40.
Recon Got Balls
The Recon class has gotten their motion sensor ball (last seen in Bad Company 2) back. This can be thrown as a grenade. Once activated, it’ll reveal hostile movement nearby.
Meds S and XL
Soldiers in the Assault class can now be fitted with two med packs.
- Medic Bag – Heals all soldiers nearby.
- First Aid Pack – Can only heal one soldier at a time.
Ammo S and XL
The Support class has two ways of handing out ammunition:
- Ammo Pack – This supplies all soldiers in close proximity with ammunition and explosives.
- Ammo Box – Can only be handed out to one fellow soldier at a time.
Use It or Lose It
In Battlefield 3, it goes like this: when you reload before your existing clip is empty, the remaining bullets will be added to your total ammunition stock.
In Battlefield 4 multiplayer, remaining bullets in the magazine you’re replacing will simply disappear along with the clip you’re throwing away.
Pistols and Revolvers are Customizable
Handguns can finally be customized. Every pistol and revolver has three slots each that you can fill with different attachments.
Better Equipped Engineers
In Battlefield 3, the players in the Engineer class often face a tough choice: mines or the repair tool. In BF4, you don’t have to choose. Now, Engineers can carry mines AND the repair tool with them.
Defibrillators Need Charging
Defibrillators have to be charged each time you use them. In Battlefield 3 multiplayer you can mass revive a whole bunch of players in a flash. In BF4 online, it’ll take longer to do the same.
More Attachment Slots
In BF3, your main weapon has three slots that you can equip with different attachments. In BF4, the weapons have been given an additional slot – four slots for attachments combined, plus a separate slot for camouflage.
In Battlefield 4 multiplayer, several things are new in and on the different vehicles and aircrafts, too. Here are some of the new features:
Now you can paint your vehicle in different camouflage patterns and decorate it with custom decal designs.
Boats Have Unlocks
Boats play a more important role in BF4 than they do in BF3. That’s why they’ve been featured with stuff that can be unlocked too. You can for example equip your attack boat with TOW missiles, Anti-Air Missiles, IR Smoke, Zoom Optics, and the Maintenance upgrade.
So you’ve discovered a hostile vehicle on four wheels or more? And you’re out of both rocket launchers and mines? Aim for the tires.
‘Cause now, you can shoot and destroy the vehicle’s tires, which makes it much more difficult for your opponent to control.
Some vehicles, like tanks, now have a limited amount of ammunition for their main weapon. The ammunition stock will be replenished (however slowly) over time.
And what else…?
Lastly – and possibly the most important news: the elevators have elevator music!
See you on the battlefield.Reddit
